Onion Domes and Other Wonders
By Colleen Messina

1     You probably don't see many onions on top of buildings. But there is one place where it would be quite common. Many Islamic buildings have round and wonderful onion domes on top.

2     The Taj Mahal has a large onion dome on top. The Taj Mahal was built as a tomb for a queen. Shah Jahan wanted to build a dazzling monument to his beloved wife. It was made from white marble. It has a long, cool pool in front of it. It was built in the shape of an octagon. An octagon has 8 sides. Its surface has flower patterns and fancy writing called calligraphy on it. The Taj Mahal is the most famous building of this style in the world.

3     Islamic architects also built many palaces and mosques. A mosque is a place where Muslims worship. One famous mosque was called Dome of Rock. It was built in Jerusalem in 688 A.D. In 1993, the Saudi Arabian government donated enough gold foil to cover its onion. Earlier, it had a brass cover. It looked much better with its new skin!
