Clear Talk
By Brenda B. Covert

1     Babies cannot talk. When they become toddlers, they begin to speak. Their first words aren't clear. They get better as they try to talk more often. Soon they are old enough to go to school. Many children enter first grade with clear speech. But other children do not speak all words clearly. They may have a problem with sounds like /s/ or /r/. A child may stutter or have a lisp. It is not a big deal. They just need a little help. They may go and see a teacher called a speech therapist.

2     This teacher will ask students to repeat words. She will ask them to do funny things with their lips, teeth, and tongues. They work at forming different sounds. Sometimes they will have homework. They will practice making the new sounds at home. The speech teacher cheers them on. She is proud of her students!
