Eleven by Eleven with Soccer
By Brenda B. Covert

Ashton and Zoey play soccer. They belong to a soccer club. There are twelve teams in the soccer club. There are eleven players on each team. The teams play against each other. It is lots of fun!

Mr. Manning runs the soccer club. It is his job to order new shirts for the players. Each team gets a different color. It is easy to tell the teams apart. Last year Ashton had a yellow shirt. Zoey had a red shirt. They wonder what color their shirts will be this year!

Ashton and Zoey practice dribbling the ball before kicking it to each other. They run and kick the ball back and forth. Then they see Mr. Manning. They run to meet him.

"Mr. Manning, have you ordered our shirts yet?" Ashton asks. Soccer season will soon arrive. He cannot wait to play!

"I hope I get a good color this year," Zoey says. "I was red last year, and I really want a blue shirt this year."

Mr. Manning smiles. "We have more teams than ever! I had to order a lot of new shirts. Can you guess how many shirts I ordered?"

Ashton and Zoey shrug. "How many?"

Mr. Manning grins. "Two bright students like you should be able to figure it out."

Ashton sighs. "How can we do that? We can't line up all the players to count them."

"That would take forever!" Zoey adds.

Mr. Manning folds his arms. "You know that there are eleven players on each team," he says. "You know that there are twelve teams. All you have to do is count by elevens. Can you count by elevens?"

     Ashton shrugs.
