Puppy in the Road
By Brenda B. and Jasmine M. Covert

Jenny was on her way home. She saw a small brown and white puppy in the road. She looked to see if cars were coming. Then she ran out to scoop up the pup and carry it to safety.

Looking at the puppy in her arms, she asked, "Are you okay?"

The puppy wriggled. It licked her chin. Jenny giggled.

Jenny looked up and down the sidewalk. No one seemed to be out looking for the puppy. "I should take you home with me," she told the puppy. "I don't want you to wander into the road again. A car might hit you!"

When Jenny got home, she showed the puppy to her mom and dad. They were reading the newspaper on the couch. The puppy wagged its tail. Her parents put down the papers. Then they looked at Jenny.

"Where did you find that dog?" her dad asked.

"In the middle of the road," Jenny said.

"Did you look for its owner?" her mom asked.
