Anacondas

1     How much do you think the world's biggest snake weighs? Would you guess 200 pounds? Would you guess 400 pounds? You'd be wrong! The world's heaviest snake is the anaconda. They can weigh as much as 550 pounds!

2     Aside from their record-winning weight, anacondas are also the leading contenders for the world's longest snakes. Some scientists think the anaconda is the longest of all snakes. Others think that the reticulated python of Southeast Asia is the longest. Amazingly, even if a reticulated python is longer than an anaconda in body length, it can never defeat the anaconda in weight. A 33-foot reticulated python weighs about the same as a 20-foot anaconda.

3     There are four species of anacondas living in South America and the Caribbean island of Trinidad. The green anaconda is the biggest and the most famous. In fact, the green anaconda is so well known that many people do not even know of the other three anaconda species. They are the yellow anaconda, the Deschauense's anaconda, and the Barbour's anaconda. Hence, the green anaconda's olive-green skin and oval-shaped black markings have become the symbol of all anacondas.
