Over the River, Through the Woods
By Beth Beutler

1     It had rained a lot in the last few weeks. One week, there were four straight days of rain. For the last few years, our lakes had been very low. All around the shoreline, we could walk out on peninsulas formed by the receding water. It was fun in one way, but sad in another. The shore looked so eroded with the exposed roots of trees weakening as the ground fell away.

2     Over the last several weeks, however, the drought was slowly replaced by adequate water. Regular winter rainfall made the lakes increase by several inches. This last week of heavy rainfall, which seemed to last day after day after day, even brought the lake and river levels up to a dangerous place. The jetties that once existed no longer were visible. In fact, a peninsula of wooded area was now covered with water.

3     We thought it would be fun to take our kayaks and explore some of this wooded area. We paddled quietly and began to maneuver among the trees and branches. Our kayak bottoms would vibrate and rumble as we passed over the top of logs and stumps. We passed under trees and through grassy, weedy areas. It was like going through an obstacle course. It took some skill to paddle around everything, but it was fun and interesting.
