Macaroni Penguins
By Vickie Chao

1     Have you ever heard the song "Yankee Doodle" from the time of the American Revolution? It starts out like this:

2
          Yankee Doodle went to town
          A-riding on a pony
Stuck a feather in his hat
          And called it macaroni.

3     Surely, the lyrics do not make much sense -- why would a Yankee Doodle stick a feather in his hat and call it macaroni? Several hundred years ago, the word "macaroni" had two meanings. The first was, of course, the pasta dish we all love so much. The second was a fashion style popular among young men at the time. It was from the second meaning that the macaroni penguin got its name.
