Earth Day Art
By Brenda B. Covert

1     Miss Fisher runs the after-school program. She stands at her desk as the children sit down at the tables. After they are seated, she will give them a project to do. Lucia likes drawing and making crafts. What will Miss Fisher have them do today?

2     Lucia chooses a seat next to her friends Isabel and Carlos. Miss Fisher passes out butter tub lids. Carlos rolls his on the table. Isabel pretends that her lid is a cookie. She bites it, and Lucia laughs. What are they going to do with the lids?

3     Miss Fisher passes out paper clips. Each child gets one. Carlos takes three and makes a chain. Isabel and Lucia want him to give them their clips. Why do they need paper clips?

4     Lucia watches Miss Fisher put big bottles of glue on each table. The glue is not white. Some of it is blue. Other bottles are green. What will they do with green and blue glue?

5     "Here is what I want you to do," Miss Fisher says. The kids turn to look. "Use your lid as a dish. Fill it with glue, both the green and the blue. When you are finished, it will look like this!"
