¹     Emma sat and watched the news with her parents. Tears filled her eyes as images of the disaster in Asia flashed across the screen.
 
²     "Oh, Mom," Emma said with a sob.
 
³     Mom put her arm around Emma to console her. "It is terrible," said Mom as she stared at the television.
 
⁴     Suddenly, Emma sat up straight. "Lastri!"
 
⁵     Mom looked at Emma with concern. "Who is Lastri?"
 
⁶     Emma jumped off the couch and faced her parents. "Lastri is my friend from school. She moved here from Indonesia last year. I have to call her!"
 
⁷     "I think that would be a good idea," said Mom.
 
⁸     Dad picked up the remote and turned off the television. "Why don't you call from the office," he suggested.
 
⁹     In the office, Dad pulled the phone book out of a drawer. "What is Lastri's last name?"
 
¹⁰     "Pang," said Emma. "They live near the school."
 
¹¹     Dad opened the phone book and scanned the page. "Here's a ‘Pang' on North Street. That's a few blocks from the school." He wrote it down and handed it to Emma.
 
¹²     Emma quickly dialed the number. After a few rings, Mr. Pang answered the phone. "Hello," he said.
