LO SPUNTINO NUMERO UNO D'AMERICA

1     Come vi piace mangiare le patatine? Vi piacciono con un panino? D'altro canto, forse le sgranocchiate come uno spuntino. Quali aromi vi piacciono? C'è una certa varietà d scelta. Potete avere panna acida, barbecue, formaggio, o sale e aceto. Potete avere le vostre patatine al forno, a pieghette, o cotte in un pentolino. Questo spuntino salato e croccante è diventato lo spuntino numero uno in America.
 
2     Nel 1990 1,5 miliardi di libbre di patate sono diventate patatine. E'vero! Ci vogliono molte patate per fare tutte quelle patatine. Approssimativamente l'11 per cento delle patate coltivate in America diventano patatine. Inoltre ci vogliono circa 10.000 libbre di patate per avere 3500 libbre di patatine. Allora come siamo arrivati alle patatine? E' iniziato tutto al Moon Lake Lodge a Saratoga Springs, New York.
 
3     Il Moon Lake Lodge era un rifugio per vacanza per ricchi. In cucina il capocuoco era George Crum. In un giorno d'estate del 1853 uno dei clienti rimandò indietro in cucina le patate fritte di George. Pare che il cliente pensasse che erano troppo spesse, troppo unte, e non abbastanza salate. Questo fece arrabbiare il Signor Crum. Decise che avrebbe fatto una nuova padellata, più sottile. Quando il cliente ricevette le nuove patate fritte, le rifiutò di nuovo. George era furioso. In risposta, George Crum le affettò così sottili che il cliente non sarebbe stato capace di mangiarle con la forchetta. Mise anche un sacco di sale sulle patatine sottili e croccanti. Quando la nuova padellata raggiunse il cliente, egli fu contentissimo. L'invenzione casuale di George Crum (chiamate "patatine Saratoga") divenne una cosa preferita a Saratoga Springs e in tutto il New England.
