Six Countries in One State
By Jayne Ann Williamson

1     Just as our nation is a great melting pot of people, culture, climate, and landforms, Oklahoma offers many different attractions. The State Department of Tourism best describes Oklahoma as six different regions, or "countries."

2     The southwestern part of the state is known as Great Plains Country. Rising up from the plains area are the Wichita Mountains near Lawton. Wheat fields are seen all around the region, and the golden "waving wheat" as described in the song Oklahoma! is present during the summer months.

3     Lake Country in the south-central portion is the home of numerous recreational lakes, parks, and resorts where all can enjoy water activities. Golf, tennis, horseback riding, and other sports are also plentiful.
