L'uovo di legno

1     Barry si trovava a casa di Drake. Vide qualcosa nell'erba sotto un albero. La raccolse. Era liscia. Sembrava un uovo di legno. Si girò verso Drake.
 
2     "Che cos'è?" chiese Barry. "Il tuo albero ha deposto un uovo? Nascerà un alberello da questa cosa?"
 
3     Drake guardò per vedere che cosa aveva trovato Barry. Un ghigno si aprì sul suo volto. "E' una vecchia noce di pecan" disse. "E' un tipo di noce".
 
4     "Davvero? Posso mangiarla?" chiese Barry.
 
5     Drake scosse la testa. Dev'essere sfuggita a mia madre l'autunno scorso. Raccoglie sempre le noci quando sono pronte". Drake la prese e diede un'occhiata. "Vedi, questa noce è cattiva". Indicò col dito un buchino. "Un insetto ha forato il guscio. Ha mangiato la noce all'interno molto tempo fa". Restituì la noce di pecan a Barry.
 
6     Barry era triste. Comunque la cosa aveva l'aspetto di un uovo fatto di legno. "Posso tenerlo? Voglio mostrarlo alla mia sorellina".
 
7     "Puoi tenerlo".
 
8     Barry infilò la noce nella tasca dei jeans. Diede dei calci in giro nell'erba per vedere se poteva trovare altre noci di pecan.
 
9     "Ehi!" disse Drake. "Penso che la mamma abbia delle noci di pecan a casa. Andiamo a chiedergliele!"
