1 On a sunny summer day in 1893, a young teacher rode to the top of a tall mountain in Colorado with a group of other teachers. The teachers hired a wagon to take them to the top of the mountain. This mountain was named Pikes Peak. The teacher's name was Katharine Lee Bates. While she was at the top of the mountain, she saw many beautiful sights. She saw the clear blue summer sky. She saw many other mountain peaks. She also saw the prairie below the mountain. The sun shining on the prairie made the wheat and grass look golden. She also saw many other mountains all around her. The shadows on the mountains made them look purple. Katharine had an idea for a poem. She sat down on a boulder near the top of the mountain. She began writing about what she saw. Her poem became a very famous song that children around the United States love to sing. The song is "America the Beautiful." You can see what Katharine Bates saw when you read the words of the song:![]() |
