Velvet the Scaredy Cat
By Mary Lynn Bushong

Velvet was a cat. Not just any cat. She was a black cat. She was black with white whiskers.

Velvet took naps outside. She liked to sleep under bushes.

She liked one bush best. She could look out. No one could see her.

It was the end of October. It was getting cold at night. It was still warm in the sun.

Velvet had been sleeping. She was warm and cozy. The sun was going down. Velvet woke up.

She flexed her paws. She yawned. She washed her face and paws.

Velvet purred. She was very happy. Then her purr stopped. She looked across the road.

What did Velvet see? She saw a large white sheet. It came flapping toward her.

Just then, Velvet heard her name called. Her eyes were very large. She jumped up. She ran to the house.

"What a good kitty," said Mom.

Velvet ran in. She sat under a chair.

Beth came down the stairs. She was dressed in black. She wore a tall, pointed, black hat.

"A witch has a black cat," she said.
