When Can We Eat Beans?

By Beth Beutler
"Do you think we'll be able to pick some beans from our garden soon?" Matt asked his mother.

"I hope so, dear," Mom answered. She continued to pull weeds away from the young plants. "It's been so dry this season that it seems harder for the plants to grow."

"It will be fun to eat things that we grew ourselves!" Matt said.

"It sure will," Mom agreed. "Plus, vegetables from the garden are really good for you."

"What kind of beans did you plant?" Matt asked.

"I've planted green beans and yellow beans."

     "How will we pick them?"

Mom took Matt's hand and guided it to the plant stems. "You see these flowers?"

     "Yes."
