A Big Change

By Kathleen W. Redman
1     Robin loves New Year's Day. It's her second-favorite holiday. Christmas is her favorite. New Year's Day is a week after Christmas. Right before New Year's Day is New Year's Eve. Robin loves New Year's Day and New Year's Eve. New Year's Eve is the last day of the old year. It's on December 31. New Year's Day is the first day of the new year. This is always a celebration at Robin's house.

2     Robin's parents set up a big party. There's lots of food, candy, and little cakes. They also have lots of sweet drinks. There are lots of colorful decorations. Everyone gets to wear a colorful hat. There's also lots of music and noise. All of Robin's brothers and sisters have a great time!

3     On New Year's Eve she gets to help her mother and father decorate little sugar cakes for the party. She gets to go to the party and eat some of the cakes. At midnight, New Year's Eve turns into New Year's Day. It's when the old year becomes the new year. At ten seconds before midnight, everyone at the party starts counting. "Ten! Nine! Eight! Seven!" everyone shouts. "Six! Five! Four..." When they get to zero everyone shouts, "Happy New Year!" Robin closes her eyes and makes a wish. She read that your first wish of the New Year would come true. Robin has had a different wish every year.
