Servire e proteggere

1     Domenica pomeriggio eravamo seduti in un ristorante quando--all'improvviso--due agenti di polizia entrarono dalla porta.
 
2     Diventai subito nervoso. Non so perché-non avevo fatto niente di male. Ma avevo paura che qualcuno stesse facendo dei furti nel ristorante o provocando un problema pericoloso. Prima che potessi fermarmi, espressi le mie preoccupazioni ad alta voce.
 
3     "Non iniziare, Brian," mi sgridò papà.
 
4     "Scusa," risposi mentre tornavo a guardare il mio piatto di maccheroni al forno. (Prendevo sempre il piatto dei bambini quando andavamo in quel ristorante. Hanno i migliori maccheroni al forno!)
 
5     Gli agenti di polizia si avvicinarono al nostro tavolo. Fecero un cenno a mio padre, che bofonchiò, "Come va?," come veloce cenno di saluto. I poliziotti continuarono a camminare.
 
6     (A proposito perché le persone fanno delle domande se non si aspettano una risposta?)
 
7     Gli agenti si sedettero tre tavoli lontano da noi dalla parte opposta della sala. Continuavo a lanciare delle occhiate furtive.
 
8     "Cosa cattura così tanto il tuo interesse, Brian?"chiese papà.
 
9     "Gli agenti di polizia hanno sempre con loro le pistole e le manette?" chiesi.
