To Serve and Protect
By Beth Beutler
We were sitting in a restaurant Sunday afternoon when--all of a sudden--two police officers walked through the door.
I immediately became nervous. I'm not sure why-I hadn't done anything wrong. But I was afraid someone was robbing the restaurant or causing a dangerous problem. Before I could stop myself, I voiced my concern aloud.
"Don't start, Brian," Dad scolded.
"Sorry," I replied as I looked back down at my plate of macaroni and cheese. (I always got the kid's meal when we came to this restaurant. They have the best macaroni and cheese!)
The police officers walked by our table. They nodded at my father, who muttered, "How're ya doin'," as a quick greeting. The officers kept walking.
(By the way, why do people ask questions like that if they don't expect an answer?)
The officers sat three booths away from us on the opposite side of the aisle. I kept sneaking glances.
"What are you so interested in, Brian?" Dad asked.
"Do police officers always carry guns and handcuffs?" I asked.
