A Card for Jen

Wes walked home slowly. It was just silly! Guys don't make cards! Cards are for girls! Only girls make cards! Why couldn't his mom just buy one? Why did he have to send a card to Jen? For a girl she was okay. He was sorry she was sick. But making a card was just silly! Wes's head was full of thoughts. He did not want to make a card.

"Mom!" Wes called as he walked into the house. "Mom, where are you? I have a big problem."

"I'm in my office," she said. "What's up?"

Wes walked back to his mother's office.

"Jen is sick. She is in the hospital. We have to make a card for her."

"I'm so sorry Jen is in the hospital," his mother said. "Do you know what is wrong?"

"Yes, I know what is wrong," Wes said. "It is wrong that I have to make a card for her!"

"Wes, I am surprised at you. I thought you liked Jen," his mother said.

"She is okay for a girl. Boys just don't make cards," Wes answered.

"Who told you that?" his mother asked.

"I just know it," Wes said. "Girls make cards. Boys don't make cards!"

"Maybe you should talk to your father," his mother said. "He might not agree with you."

"Dad will say it is silly, too," Wes said. He went to his room to do his homework.

Later Wes heard his father drive his car into the garage. He went downstairs to meet him. He knew his father would agree with him. Then he would not have to make a card. He would tell his teacher that his father said it was silly for boys to make cards.
