A Hen's Homework

A hen is a mother chicken. She has a lot of jobs. First she must lay eggs. Then she must take care of those eggs. Once the eggs hatch, she then looks after her chicks.

An egg starts as a little white spot deep inside a hen. When a rooster and a hen mate, the eggs are fertilized. Soon the eggs are ready to be laid.

After a hen lays her eggs, she sits on them to keep them warm. Once the eggs are warm, the chicks inside the eggs begin to grow. The hen sits on her eggs for five days. Then she leaves, but only for a quick break. The hen must find some food and water. She then hurries back to her eggs and sits on them once again.
