Best Friends

Jean sat back in her chair. "There!" she said. "I am all finished!"

On the table in front of Jean were ten bags. The bags were clear. There were colorful jelly beans inside. Each bag was tied with a pretty ribbon. Jean was ready for Sweetest Day.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Jean and her family had just moved to Ohio. They had lived in California before. Jean had not known anything about Sweetest Day. She did not think people in California had a Sweetest Day.

Jean's best friend had told her about Sweetest Day. She said that it was a day to remember sweet people. At first it was just for people who sometimes were forgotten. Candy and small gifts were given to people in hospitals, people with disabilities, and people without homes.

Jean thought it was a good holiday. She thought about what she could do. She decided to make little bags of jelly beans for the sweet people she knew. She had enough jelly beans in her big jar to make ten bags.

Jean thought and thought about the sweet people she knew. There were so many! She made a list. There were sixty-three people on her list!

"Choose the very sweetest people of all," Kathy said. "Read the list and choose the thirty sweetest people. Then read the list again and choose the twenty sweetest people. Then read the list one more time and choose the ten that are the sweetest ones of all!"
