Gabriella Gets a Hearing Aide in Mexico

On a warm day in 1991, seven-year old Gabriella put on her best clothes. She then went on a trip with her family. They went far from their village. She rode on a loud, gray donkey. But Gabriella could not hear the cranky beast because she was deaf.


Gabriella saw Dr. Micken. He knew how to help deaf children. He came from America. He wanted to help poor children. He went to Oaxaca, Mexico. Gabriella got a hearing aide. She was so happy when she heard music for the first time!


Dr. Micken wanted to help poor children with hearing problems. Gabriella was his first patient. Other children saw the doctor. They were poor. They lived in remote villages. They also traveled to see the doctor. He gave hearing aides to 89 children.
