Instant Energy

Melanie and Terry found eight bowls and put them on the kitchen table. Their father put miniature marshmallows, dried pineapple, dried apricots, mixed nuts, raisins, dried cranberries, salted sunflower seeds, and plain M&Ms on the table with the bowls. Their mother put a whole stack of sandwich bags next to the first bowl.

What in the world were they doing?

Can you guess?

Hmmm . . .Making a cake? Making cookies? Playing a game with food? No, none of those answers is correct. They were getting ready to make trail mix.

Trail mix is a mixture of dried fruit, grains, nuts, and sometimes chocolate. There are many different kinds of trail mix. People put the things they like best in their trail mixes. Some people use cereal. Some people just have to have pretzels or sunflower seeds in their trail mix. Others put chocolate chips or different kinds of candy in it, too.

Trail mix is a very good snack food for hikers. It tastes good. It doesn't weigh much, and that is very important to hikers! It is easy to store. It is nutritious. It is a quick source of energy.

The Johnson family is making trail mix for John, Melanie and Terry's older brother. He is a hiker. He will begin hiking on the Appalachian Trail soon. The trail is over two thousand miles long, so John will need lots of energy! The family will make many bags of trail mix before John finishes the trail.

Mr. Johnson put each ingredient in its own bowl. Everything was ready.

Melanie put 1/2 cup of marshmallows and 1/2 cup of pineapple in the first bag. She handed the bag to Terry.
