Letters to Sam

Candy sat at the table. She had paper, a pencil, and some crayons. Mom came and looked over her shoulder.

"What are you doing?" asked Mom.

"I am trying to write a letter," said Candy.

"That is good," said Mom. "People like to get letters. Who are you writing your letter to?" asked Mom.

"I am writing to Sam," said Candy.

"What a good idea," said Mom. "He will like that."

"Is Sam a veteran?" asked Candy.

Mom said, "Sam is a soldier. He is serving our country. He will be a veteran when he finishes his military service."

"Will Sam be able to doctor animals then?" asked Candy.

"What makes you ask that?" asked Mom. "Sam is a soldier, not a doctor."

"When Bosco hurt his paw, he went to the vet. I have heard veterans called vets," said Candy.

Mom smiled. "That word can have two meanings."

"You mean that an animal doctor is not a veteran?" asked Candy.

"He might be," said Mom. "An animal doctor is a veterinarian. Men who serve in the military are veterans."
