Mom's Rules

National Student Safety Month

Reading Comprehension for June 1

Today was Alan Ant's first day of school.

He wore his best shirt and pants. He put on his new hat, too.

For breakfast he had a sugar cube and a crumb of bread. He had a cup of dew to drink.

After breakfast, his mother said, "Alan, you will like school. I want you to learn new things. I want you to have fun. I want you to be safe."

Alan was in a hurry. He wanted to get started on his walk.

"Be still," his mother said. "I want to tell you some rules."

"Oh, no," Alan said. "Not more rules!"

"Yes," his mother said, "More rules. These rules will keep you safe."

Alan sat down.

"Rule One," his mother said. "Always look both ways before you cross a path."
