Rachel Interviews Tad the Termite

"Good morning, boys and girls. I'm Rachel Scott, the host of Bugs Beyond Belief. Today I have with me a very hungry little guy named Tad. He's a termite, and he's been eating nonstop since he got here. As you might already know, termites have a bad reputation. Tad said he's here to give termites a good name. That is, if he'll stop chewing on his chair. Are you hungry, Tad?"

"Very. The wood on this chair is pretty tasty. Mind if I gnaw on this while we talk?"

"Not at all. I think we can get another chair after you leave. So tell us a little about yourself, Tad."

"Thanks, Rachel. I'm a termite, which most people believe to be a horrible pest. People always say that all we do is eat up houses. Well, there's more to being a termite than just eating wood, you know."

"Really? I couldn't tell."

"For starters, there are lots of different kinds of termites, and we can be found pretty much all over the world. Of course, we don't live in Antarctica. Even within different species of termites, there are king and queen termites, worker termites, and soldier termites. We all have very specific jobs to do."

"Which are you, Tad?"
