The Stomach

Have you ever heard strange noises coming from your stomach? Did they sound like someone gargling in there? Did anyone tell you that your stomach was growling?

Stomach noises are a normal part of digestion. They are usually your stomach telling you that it is time for food. This happens when the muscles in your stomach and intestines contract. The contractions push on air pockets in the wall of your stomach and make sounds like popping bubble wrap!

Once you eat and food gets down there, the muscles don't contract so hard, so there is less noise. Doctors call these noises borborygmi. Isn't that a funny word?
