Up and Down, Up and Down

International Mountain Day

Reading Comprehension for December 11

Tim stood at the very top of the mountain. He had been climbing for two days. It was a long hike. He was very proud of himself. No one else his age had climbed this mountain.

The first day Tim had walked up and down, up and down. Each time he walked up, he went a little higher.

In the morning he had seen other climbers. They were coming down the mountain. They shook their heads at him.

"The mountain is too high," they said. "You will never make it to the top."

Tim just smiled and waved at them. He would not quit. He knew he could make it to the top.

Tim stopped by a stream to have his lunch. He had a big hunk of bread. He had some cheese. He drank some water from the stream. It was a very good lunch.

In the afternoon he had seen a few more climbers. They were coming down the mountain, too. They looked very tired. They shook their heads at him.

"The mountain is too high," they said. "You will never make it to the top."
