What Has Feathers but Cannot Fly?

"Good morning, boys and girls. I am glad you are watching the show today. We have taken a very long trip to visit one of the most interesting birds in the world. We are in New Zealand, a beautiful island country in the Pacific Ocean.

Before I introduce our guest, I have a question for you. What has feathers and wings but cannot fly? You might guess penguin or ostrich, and you'd be right. But kiwi birds could be another answer to that question.

Our guest today is Kiki, a little spotted kiwi. Some people call them little spots. How are you, Kiki?"

"I'm fine, Keith. How are you?"

"Just fine, Kiki. Exactly how small are you?"

"I'm eight inches high. When I'm grown, I will be about ten inches high."

"On what island do you live?"

"I live on Kapiti Island. Some of us live on other islands in New Zealand. Some species of kiwi live on the New Zealand mainland. Little spots can't live on the mainland, though."

"Why not?"

"There are pigs and cats on the mainland. They will kill us. We used to live there, though."

"Are all kinds of kiwi birds endangered?"

"Yes, they are. There are five species of kiwi. We are all endangered."

"I have heard that you have a good sense of smell."

"Yes, we do, Keith. We are the only birds with nostrils at the end of our bills."
