What Is His Name?

Once upon a time not so very long ago, there was a field mouse. He was brown and had white paws. He was only about an inch long. His tail was as long as he was! He was much smaller than his brothers and sisters.

His father called all the children into the family room.

"Children, soon it will be Naming Day. Your mother and I will tell everyone your names then. We have chosen names for each of you. Let's see how you like them!"

The little field mice were excited. They all wanted to know what their names would be. They scampered around the family room. They laughed and shouted.

"All right, children," their father said. "Everyone get in a line."

The children got in a line. They looked at their father. He pointed at the first little mouse.

"Your name is Acorn," he said, "because you will grow and be strong."

"Your name is Daisy," he said to the second little mouse, "because you make me think of pretty white flowers with sunshiny faces."

"And your name is Honey," he said to the next one, "because you are so sweet."

The fourth little mouse was named Rose.
