This spelling strategies worksheet teaches students how to add -ED to words and gives them plenty of opportunities to practice.

Each page features three sections with directions that explain:

* The WXY Saying that tells students how to add -ED.

* If a word ends with a CVC that doesn't follow the WXY Saying, double the last letter before adding -ED.

* If a word ends with -e, drop the -e before adding -ED.

The directions ask students to circle the words in the word bank that follow the rule described above. Then, they write the word and its -ED version below. For example, they would circle and write the word "ROW" when following the WXY Saying. Then they would write "ROWED" on the line.

For example, you can introduce the WXY Saying for words that end in -ED. You can also show them how the same rule works for words that end in -ING.
