Learning new vocabulary words is easier when students understand linguistic rules, like different prefixes. This enables them to memorize the meaning of prefixes instead of each individual word, which can help them decode new words they are unfamiliar with.

This learning center features a set of cards and a blank student page. Students draw a card from the pile. Then, they make a new word using one of the prefixes on the student page and write it down. For example, if students draw the word "perfect," they can write it under the "im-" heading as "imperfect."

The student page provides detailed instructions for students, which include the fact that they will not use all the lines on the page. A teacher instruction page includes images of what the folder should look like, in addition to which pages should be laminated so the learning center can be reused.
