"Adding, Subtracting, and Identifying Fractions With Images" is a worksheet that encourages students to visualize fractions as they add, subtract, and identify them. Each question or problem includes a shape that is divided into smaller pieces. Some problems have pieces shaded in, and they ask students to write a fraction for what is NOT shaded. Others ask students to shade in a specific fraction, like one-half.
Addition and subtraction problems are modeled with shaded shapes. Students then color the correct number of parts in the answer. Each question includes an addition or subtraction problem with space for students to write the answer as a fraction, in addition to shading the answer in the shape.
Other pages have students fill in the blanks to identify how many equal parts are in an image, as well as how many pieces are shaded in. Additional questions ask students to circle the appropriate fraction for what's shown in the shape.
Worksheets contain a wide variety of different shapes, like honeycombs, wiggly lines, four-leaf clovers, and even made-up shapes to expand their thinking.
When learning fractions in early grades, it can be extremely helpful to provide students with a visual aid. They can work with manipulatives, but they can also see figures with shaded pieces on a worksheet.
Students can write corresponding fractions for images with shaded sections, or they can be asked to shade in a fraction on a blank shape. You can keep things interesting by having students work with different shapes. They can start by working with squares and circles. Then, you can introduce more interesting shapes, like four-leaf clovers and honeycomb shapes, later on.
You can encourage creative thinking by having students come up with their own shapes and asking them to color in a certain fraction. It's a great way to give students some freedom to be creative, but you also get to see if they understand the concept of dividing a shape into equal parts.
