This learning center uses a fun feather game to give students practice adding and subtracting to 20. It encourages mental math and supports place value development with two different games and individual and multi-player options.

The simplest version of the game asks students to roll a die and add 10 to the number they got. Then, they use a mini eraser to cover the feathered number on the add 10 game mat. Individual students see how many feathers they can cover up before the time is up. Multiple players take turns and see who covers the most feathers before the time is up.

A more difficult version of the game asks students to choose whether they add or subtract 10. Instead of using the die, students flip over a more/less card, decide if they want to add or subtract 10, and then cover the feathered number on the + or - game mat. The player with the most feathers wins, or individuals can see how many feathers they can cover in the allotted time.

Both color and black-and-white game mats are included. Materials include everything you need to set up the center, including instructions for teachers as well as detailed instructions for students. There is even a cut-and-assemble die you can use in lieu of a real die, as well as optional back-of-card images you can use if you decide to laminate the more/less cards.
