"Addition Word Problems: Counting Scoops of Ice Cream" is a learning center that introduces young students to math word problems through repetition. Each word problem introduces a student and shares how many scoops of ice cream they get. Then, they get additional scoops. Students have to figure out how many scoops the student has altogether.
The activity comes with ice cream scoops that are cut out and laminated so students can use them to find the answer. For example, if Lily gets 2 scoops of ice cream and then gets 3 more, students would put 2 scoops in her bowl, then 3 scoops before counting them up and writing their answer in the box.
The learning center pack includes 10 ice cream mats and 33 ice cream scoops that need to be cut out and laminated. It includes the cover image and bin label, as well as providing teacher directions, student directions, and additional resources. For example, teachers can choose to have students use pompoms or playdough as scoops of ice cream instead of laminated pictures.
This activity helps students practice addition up to 10, as well as giving them practice with word problems that relate to situations with real-world math.
