"Beginning Letter Sounds Word Find" is a puzzle worksheet that looks like a word find, but it's a little different. Students still circle the words hidden in the grid of letters, but instead of finding the words in a word bank, students must find them on their own.
Each puzzle features a certain family of words that start with the same combination of letters or letter blends. For example, one puzzle features words that start with BL, while others focus on TH words. A series of blanks are listed on the right-hand side of each puzzle. Each blank starts with the letter combination of the words students need to find, and it's their job to write the rest of the words in the blank before circling them in the word find. At the bottom, they write how many words they circled.
Word finds can be a fun way for students to practice their spelling skills. They can be an especially good way for students to practice different letter blends and combinations when the word bank focuses on words that start or end with the same letters. For example, students could find words that begin with TH or words that end with a silent E.
You can give students an even bigger challenge if you don't automatically give them the words in the word bank. For example, the worksheet can tell students that all the words in the puzzle start with TR. They have to discover all the words that begin with TR and write them in the blanks before circling them in the word find.
Word finds can also be a great way to give students additional practice with letters, combinations, and blends you're working on in class. For example, you might have students complete a PH word find while practicing PH spelling words for the week.
