"Completing Analogies and Vocabulary Word Finds" is a worksheet that allows students to practice finding analogies, spelling, and vocabulary.
The left side of the worksheet starts with directions that read, "Complete each analogy with the best word." The directions are followed by a word bank where the answers can be found. A sample analogy reads, "freshwater : river :: saltwater : _______." Students look in the word bank and choose the best word for the analogy. In this case, the answer is "ocean." There are more words in the word bank than there are answers, providing students with a greater challenge.
The right side of the worksheet features a word find. There is a word bank at the bottom that contains the words that they need to find. Some of the words are included in the analogy word bank, and some aren't, which further expands your students' vocabulary and provides them with additional spelling practice.
Being able to complete analogies is a skill that encourages critical thinking, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension.
When giving students analogies to finish, consider giving them a word bank to choose from, especially if your students are very young or they are older students who are tackling more difficult words. Once they get the hang of completing analogies, they can create their own for classmates to solve.
You can also incorporate spelling words into an analogy activity. Those words can be incorporated into a word find or a crossword to give students additional spelling practice.
