"Cursive Writing Practice: Writing and Finding Missing Letters" is a worksheet that gives students practice writing in cursive. Each page begins by having students copy each letter before writing a word that starts with that letter. Sometimes students come up with the word, and sometimes they write a made-up word that helps them practice writing capital letters and lowercase letters in a series, like "Diidd."
The bottom of each page features run-on cursive letters with hidden words inside. Students must search through the words to find the missing letters in the section below. For example, one word might be ch_c_ _n. Students look up at the running lines of words above to find the missing word. Then, they fill in the missing letters to write the word. In this case, the answer is "chicken."
Each section of the worksheet provides blank spaces where students can write each letter. Some spaces contain grey lines that students can trace, as well as letters with black lines that show them what letters are supposed to look like. Capital letters are accompanied by arrows that show students which direction to draw the lines in each letter. There are also blank lines and spaces where students are directed to write letters in cursive all by themselves.
Showing letters and giving students space to practice writing those letters is a good way for them to begin writing cursive. Letters that they are learning for the first time can be accompanied by examples that feature arrows showing which direction to move their pencil.
Students should also practice writing letters in combinations so they can feel what it's like to write without picking up their pencil. They can write real words, but it can also be a lot of fun for students to write made-up words, like "Fooff."
Puzzles that integrate cursive can be engaging, especially when students get bored with copying letters. For example, you can write a string of words together with no spaces. Students must identify the words hidden in the string of letters and write them down. This activity gives them cursive writing practice, but they also get practice reading letters that flow into each other.
