Students are able to double-check their answers to math problems and do real-world reasoning when they learn to estimate. This learning center gives students practice estimating the number of colored dots on different cards. Each card features dots arranged randomly in a variety of colors that include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, and black. There are 10 cards altogether, with cards reflecting estimates in increments of 10 between 10 and 100.

Students take a student page and read the directions that instruct them to sort the cards by how many shapes are on each card, putting the card with the fewest shapes first. Once they have the cards in order, they write the card number next to each estimate. For example, if they think card #6 has about 10 colored dots, they would write "6" next to the given estimate of 10 on the card.

Student directions walk them through the process step-by-step, including when to put the set of cards back into the envelope. Teacher directions with images are also included that help you prepare the center, along with an answer key that makes double-checking student work easy.
