The worksheet titled "Fill in the Missing Vowel, First Letter, and Last Letter" features different images with writing practice lines. A portion of the word is filled in with dotted lines for students to trace, but they have to figure out and write the missing letter. Students have to fill in the missing first letter, last letter, or vowel, according to the directions.

First grade worksheets feature 12 images with the same missing letter location, whether it's filling in the last letter or the missing vowel. Second grade worksheets feature 9 images in sets of three. Each set of images has its own set of directions for students to find the first letter, the last letter, or the missing vowel.

The more practice students get at sounding out and writing letters, the more confident readers and writers they become. You can give students practice by filling in the first or last letters in different words. This can be an especially good way for students to practice sounding out and writing tricky letters. For example, you might show a picture of a pig, a dog, and a bat. Students have to fill in the letters "p," "d," and "b" by sounding out the word.

You can also have students practice vowel sounds. Younger students might sound out a word like "fish" and fill in the letter "i." Older students who are practicing trickier words might fill in the "e" at the end of "cake."
