The worksheet titled "Mixed Skills Math Word Problems" features higher-level word problems for fifth and sixth graders that include a variety of strategies and operations. For example, one might include a series of cuts to pizzas. Students have to draw the pizzas and determine who ate the most. Other questions address pattern recognition, time, money, measurements, and more.
Each worksheet features four math word problems that are located inside their own boxes. Each box includes space where students can write the answer and show their thinking.
Having grade-level appropriate math word problems can be very helpful in encouraging problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Having individual problems or worksheets with clearly designated problems gives students the ability to solve one problem as a Minute Math activity, or the entire worksheet can be solved as homework or as an early finisher activity.
It can be especially powerful to choose math word problems that relate to what students are currently learning in class or skills they need to review before a test. For example, students might read a fraction problem about pizzas during a unit on fractions, or you could choose a math word problem about measurements when reviewing area and perimeter ahead of a test.
