The "Mixed Vowel Adventures: Identifying and Understanding Vowels and Their Sounds" learning center teaches students how to identify vowels, why words need them, and how to hear the differences between long and short sounds through a variety of fun adventure-style activities.

* Count out the clues and place the right vowel stars where they belong in the alphabet. For example, the clue could be "the fifth letter," and students choose the star with the letter "e" on it.

* Put volcano vowel cards over the words that have each vowel sound.

* Read the letter sound clues and decide which word fits the description.

The learning center includes detailed student instructions that tell them to do all the pages, use the materials in the "Cards and More" envelope, and have a teacher or another student check their work.
