By figuring out what comes next in a series, students are able to work on their sequencing and pattern recognition skills. You can support a more in-depth understanding of these skills by asking students to sequence different things, like letters and pictures.

The directions tell students to take an envelope with a set of pattern cards, an envelope with a set of answer cards, and a student page. They look at each pattern card and figure out which answer card will complete the pattern. Then, they write the answer card number next to the pattern number card on the student page. When they're done, they put the cards back in the correct envelopes.

Pattern cards can contain pictures or letters. Every card has an AB pattern, but items in the series may be displayed horizontally, vertically, or in a circle. For example, the pattern might feature an umbrella, flower, umbrella, flower. Pattern cards are clearly labeled with their number on the student page, with a blank where they write the answer card number. They can use answer cards more than once.
