This fun addition and subtraction center makes students the managers of their very own pie factory! They have to input an addition or subtraction rule to figure out what the output of pies will be.

There are two ways to play:

* Students find the rule by placing an input/output cutout on the mat that shows the number of pies that go in and come out. For example, the cut-out might start with 53, 87, and 19 and show the answers 57, 91, and 23. They write the rule "Add 4."

* Students find the answer by pulling an addition or subtraction rule and the input line on the pie factory mat. For example, they might pull the "Add 4" rule and an input cutout with 29, 42, and 10. They write 33, 46, and 14 in the blanks.

The learning center includes input/output cut-outs, rule cut-outs for adding 1-10, and rule cut-outs for subtracting 1-10 that can be laminated for reuse. An accountability worksheet is also included where students can record the answers as they work. The instructions page includes information for teachers as well as students.

This center provides a fun way for students to practice their addition and subtraction skills. Practicing with inputs and outputs helps them practice addition and subtraction facts, in addition to helping them identify numerical patterns, expanding their knowledge of numbers.
