This math learning center helps students visualize numbers using words and base-10 blocks. This expands their knowledge, so they have a better understanding of place value and visualizing numbers. It also incorporates a fun puzzle activity that supports student learning and encourages engagement.

Students start by choosing a place value card. Each card includes 12 squares that show a number represented by base-10 blocks. Students must complete the puzzle by matching the values on the puzzle pieces to the numbers represented by base-10 blocks. There are four total puzzles. Two puzzles feature numerical digits that are matched to the base-10 values. The remaining two puzzles feature numbers written as words that are matched to the base-10 values.

Instructions help teachers cut up the corresponding puzzles and place them in their own envelopes so they can be matched with each place value card. Or, for an extra challenge, you can ask students to find the right pieces for each puzzle. Materials include envelope labels, a bin label, a folder cover, and student directions so they can complete the center independently.
