Haven and Brent are putting together care packages at the animal shelter. They need your help using the greatest common factor to figure out how many bags they can make for each set of items.
A factor is a number that divides another number exactly, with no leftovers. For example, 2 and 3 are factors of 6 because 2 times 3 equals 6. The greatest common factor, or GCF, is the biggest number that divides two or more numbers without leaving a remainder. Here's how you find the GCF of 12 and 18: Draw a factor tree to break 12 into prime numbers. A prime number, like 2 or 3, has only two factors: 1 and itself. Do the same for 18. Next, look at both factor trees and circle the prime numbers they have in common. Multiply those common numbers together to get the greatest common factor. Ready to give it a try? Haven and Brent will be so happy to have your help!
