The worksheet titled "Word Recognition: Writing and Word Find Worksheet" starts with a box at the top of the page filled with many different words. Students circle all of the words they know and write two of the words they circled in a sentence. Then, they write five words they don't know or they would like to know better.

There is a word find at the bottom of the page. Students circle the words to the right or down that are in the box at the top of the worksheet. Each letter is used exactly one time, which helps them double-check their work as they go.

It is important for students to build their vocabulary, which means being able to identify words they know and words they don't know. An easy way to do that is to provide students with a list of words. They write the definition, looking up the words they are unfamiliar with. You can encourage students to use their existing knowledge to write the words they know and understand in a sentence.

This type of activity can be especially powerful when learning prefixes and suffixes, as students can predict what a word means before they look it up.

Word finds can be a great way for students to practice spelling the vocabulary words they just found. Other activities could include filling in the blank in a sentence with the right vocabulary word or having students find the vocabulary word from the word bank that matches a definition.
