The article titled "Write the Missing Letters in Words With Picture Clues" features sets of three images. Each group of images is displayed with a portion of the word that is dotted for students to trace on practice lines.
Each set of three images also includes a letter bank titled "Mixed up letters" that features three individual letters. Students have to fill in the letters from the letter bank into the words and trace the remaining letters. The missing letter can be the last letter, the first letter, or a vowel in the middle of the word.
First grade worksheets feature three sets of three images in each set. Second grade worksheets feature two sets of three images in each set.
It's important for students to learn to say words and identify letter sounds because it makes them better readers. Learning how to write those sounds makes them better writers. You can combine these two skills and give students practice integrating both.
You can show students a picture and ask them to write down the first letter in the word. For example, if you show a gallon of milk, they would write down the letter "M." They could also write the lower-case letter for extra practice.
Students who are better at letter sounds may be asked to identify the last letter or the vowel in the middle of a word. If you want students to practice writing entire words, give them a word bank and have them write the words that go with each image.
