Licensed Practical Nurses
By Kathleen W. Redman

1     Are you interested in having a health career? Perhaps you like the idea of helping people be more comfortable or helping them get well. Do you like working with babies, children, adults, or the elderly? Do you like biology, math, and health classes? If these things are true of you, you might like to become a licensed practical nurse.

2     Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are a very important part of health care. Their duties may include giving injections, taking vital signs, observing patients, dressing wounds, and giving medication. LPNs help patients with daily living activities like dressing, eating, and bathing. Some LPNs work in special areas such as pediatrics (caring for children), gerontology (caring for older persons), and dentistry. Registered nurses, doctors, or dentists direct most LPNs.

3     LPNs work in many different settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, dental offices, mental health hospitals, community health clinics, and private homes. Some LPNs work in just one setting for their entire careers. Others choose to change the kind of work they do often.
