9-11 Search Dogs
By Mary Lynn Bushong
1 Caption: A tired search dog rests as rescuers keep working around him.
2 "Mom," called Beth. She stared at the TV screen.
3 Mom came in the room.
4 "What do you want, Beth?" she asked.
5 "Look," said Beth, "that dog looks like Boomer. Why is it riding in that basket?"
6 Mom sat down to watch TV with Beth. Everything behind the dog was a mess. There was smoke. There were broken buildings. It looked very sad.
7 "What is going on, Mom?" asked Beth. "Did this just happen?"
8 Mom shook her head.
9 "No, this happened before you were born. These are pictures of searchers in New York City. This was right after the attacks of September 11, 2001."
10 "Was the dog a searcher, too?" asked Beth.
11 Mom nodded.
